I build software for a living, and for years the part of freelancing I dreaded most wasn't the work, it was the admin around the work. Remembering what I did, opening an app, clicking through a form, formatting the thing, then chasing the payment. So I built a tool that lets me skip all of that and just talk to my AI. This is how I actually invoice my own clients now.
The setup, done once
I added my two regular clients with their hourly rates, then connected InvoiceBadger to Claude as an MCP connector. That part takes about a minute: copy a URL, paste it into Claude, sign in. From then on, Claude can log my time and manage my invoices for me. That is the entire setup.
What a normal week looks like
I don't sit down to "do invoicing" as a separate job any more. It happens in the flow of the work. When I finish something, I just tell Claude:
- "Log 2 hours on the GardenSite invoice for the checkout fixes." It adds the line at GardenSite's rate and tells me the new total.
- "Add a fixed fee of £150 to Musicline for the setup work." Done.
- "What's unpaid right now?" It reads back the outstanding total across every client.
At the end of the month I send the invoice as a clean link the client opens and saves as a PDF, and when the money lands I say "mark the GardenSite invoice paid." No spreadsheet, no app I have to remember to open, no form to fill in.
Why talking beats forms
This works because the information is already in my head the moment I finish a task. A form makes me stop, switch context, and retype what I already know. Saying it in one sentence keeps me in the work, and the invoice quietly stays correct in the background.
When I'd rather click
Some days I just want to look at everything, so there's a plain web dashboard too: the same invoices, clients and totals, all editable by hand. Same account, same data, two ways in. I use the chat most days and the dashboard when I want the overview.
